I have selected three texts. the first is the NASB–New American Standard Bible. It is supposedly the most literal translation to English amongst traditional American English translations. The second is from an interlinear Bible, which is a direct translation from Hebrew to English–as direct as possible. You will notice the way sentences are rendered differently in Hebrew than in English. Everything is “out of order,” according to the way we read and speak English today. The third rendering is from an interlinear Hebrew to English Bible as well, but the words and sentences have been ordered according to modern English standards. It is very, very similar to the second rendering, it is just put in order according to English grammar.

24 “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the wrongdoing, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 So you are to know and understand that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until Messiah the Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with streets and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks, the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will confirm a covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come the one who makes desolate, until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, gushes forth on the one who makes desolate.”

It is very important that we have clear rendering because this series of verses is one of the most debated series of verses there are in religious scholarship today. There are a few entirely different schools of eschatology that hinge on the interpretation of these three verses. I puzzled, specifically, over verse 27 for many years. Renderings in traditional English translations appear to me to over complicate what the Hebrew texts say, according to the interlinear translations.

Going forward, I will use the third selection for analysis. I plan to go verse by verse. These three verses in Daniel, in my view, are what all Biblical prophecy pivots on. They are the centerpiece in history between the covenant God made with Israel in the Old Testament and the covenant Jesus Christ makes with the world in the New Testament. They also set up a method of counting time that appears to repeat itself in several instances in the book of Revelation. When this method of counting is compared against events in world history it makes a very compelling narrative in the Scriptures concerning prophecy and witness that should strengthen any believer’s faith.
